Day 27 – Friday July 12- Bemidji to Escanaba
Spent the night at
Bemidji State Park on the shores of Lake Bemidji.
Woke up early and
went downtown to get photos of Paul Bunyon and Babe the Blue Ox. Paul Bunyon
was a larger than life legend in the founding of the area. He was a wood cutter that cleared the woods
and found Babe during the winter of Blue snow.
Babe measured 42 axe handles long and a plug of tobacco between her
horns.

I remember seeing
the statue when I was a little girl visiting with my parents. I swear that Paul was over two stories high
then, but as a little girl he probably did look that tall. I love the legend and love the statues.
The source of the
Mississippi River is only a few miles away at Lake Itasca. It flow into Lake Bemidji and then exits town
flowing south.
Downtown Bemidji has a Sculpture Walk that had some very unique pieces of work.
Around lunch time we arrived at Duluth Minnesota. Here the St Louis river flows into lake Superior.
We kept driving
east entering Wisconsin and finally Michigan.
Only one state away from home.
We decided to get
a hotel in Escanaba to get a good rest before the push home tomorrow. We drove to the lake shore and walked along
the shore of Little Bay De Noc which is connected to Lake Michigan.

Neat bird sculpture along the shore
